A browser extension wallet is powerful and convenient β and, because it lives in your browser alongside every website you visit, it deserves more caution than the mobile app. Fake wallet extensions are a well-documented attack vector. Get the source right and the rest is straightforward.
Before we start: no legitimate extension ever asks you to paste your recovery phrase into a web page to "install," "activate," or "sync." The phrase is entered only inside the extension's own secure UI during setup or restore. Anywhere else = phishing.
What the SafePal extension is for
The extension is a desktop companion focused on connecting to decentralised apps (DApps) β DEXs, lending protocols, NFT marketplaces, and Web3 sites β directly from your browser. Instead of scanning a QR code with your phone every time, the site talks to the extension, and you approve transactions with a click (and a confirmation).
Think of it as the desktop counterpart to the app: same self-custody principles, same keys-under-your-control model, optimised for a workflow where you're already at a computer. For how DApp connections work and how to stay safe once connected, pair this with our DApp guide.
Supported browsers
| Browser | Supported | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | β | Chrome Web Store (via safepal.com) |
| Microsoft Edge | β (Chromium) | Chrome Web Store / Edge Add-ons |
| Brave | β (Chromium) | Chrome Web Store |
| Firefox | β | Firefox Add-ons (via safepal.com) |
| Safari | β οΈ Check official | Confirm current support at safepal.com |
Exact browser availability changes over time; always confirm the current list and grab the install link from the official site, safepal.com, rather than from a search ad.
Installing the extension safely
- Start at the official site. Go to safepal.com (ideally from a bookmark) and follow its link to the extension's web-store listing.
- Verify the listing. Check the publisher name, user count and reviews on the Chrome Web Store / Firefox Add-ons page. Clones often have low counts and recent fraud complaints.
- Add to browser. Click Add to Chrome / Add to Firefox and confirm the permission prompt.
- Pin it. Pin the extension to your toolbar so you always click the real one β not a spoofed pop-up.
- Set it up. Create a new wallet or import an existing one (more below).
The fake-extension trap: malicious extensions impersonate popular wallets to steal seed phrases the moment you type them. Defend yourself: install only via the official site's link, verify the publisher, and never import a phrase into an extension you reached through an ad or random link.
Creating vs importing in the extension
On first run you'll choose:
- Create a new wallet β generates a fresh recovery phrase. Back it up offline exactly as in our setup guide.
- Import an existing wallet β enter your recovery phrase to bring an existing wallet (e.g. from your phone) into the browser. Only ever do this inside the extension's own window.
Either way, set a strong extension password. As with the mobile app, this password protects the extension on this computer β it is not a cloud account and cannot recover funds elsewhere. Only the recovery phrase can.
Pairing with the mobile app
Many users want the same wallet on phone and desktop. You have two clean options:
- Same recovery phrase, two devices. Import the phrase into the extension so both the app and extension control the same addresses. Simple, but the phrase now exists in two software environments β only do this on a trusted, malware-free computer.
- Keep keys on your phone/hardware, sign via connection. For higher security, keep keys on the mobile app or air-gapped hardware device and use the extension/WalletConnect to broadcast β the keys never touch the desktop.
For larger balances, option two (or pairing with the hardware wallet) is the safer pattern. See our review for when hardware is worth it.
Using the extension day to day
- Connecting to a DApp: click "Connect Wallet" on the site, pick SafePal, and approve the connection. Always confirm you're on the real site first.
- Approving transactions: read every pop-up. Check the network, the amount, and what permission you're granting β especially token "approvals," which can authorise spending.
- Switching networks: the extension lets you change chains (Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, etc.). Make sure the DApp and the selected network match.
- Revoking permissions: periodically review and revoke approvals you no longer use β covered in our DApp safety guide.
Browser-specific risk: because the extension can interact with any site, a malicious or compromised website may prompt a deceptive signature. Never blind-sign. If a request looks unfamiliar or asks for unlimited spending approval, reject it.
Troubleshooting common issues
| Problem | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Extension won't connect to a DApp | Refresh the page, confirm the right network, re-select SafePal in the connect menu |
| Balance shows zero | Wrong network selected, or RPC issue β switch network or check connection |
| Transaction stuck pending | Network congestion / low gas β see our note below and the BSC guide |
| Forgot extension password | Reinstall and restore with your recovery phrase |
For stuck transactions, the cause is almost always network congestion or a gas fee set too low. You typically wait it out or use the wallet's speed-up/replace feature where available. Never "pay support to unstick" anything β that's a scam.

Open CEX.IO Wallet βExtension FAQ
Is there an official SafePal browser extension?
Yes β for Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave) and Firefox, mainly for desktop DApp interaction. Always install via the official listing linked at safepal.com and verify the publisher.
Is the extension safe?
The extension itself follows self-custody principles, but browser extensions carry inherent risk because they interact with websites. Install only the genuine one, never paste your phrase into a web page, and read every transaction prompt.
Can I use the same wallet on the app and extension?
Yes β import the same recovery phrase, or keep keys on your phone/hardware and connect. For larger balances, the connect/hardware approach is safer.
How do I spot a fake extension?
Check the publisher name, install count and reviews on the web store. Reach the listing only via the official site. Be suspicious of low install counts and recent fraud complaints.
